Lunch is always incredible as many people choose to bring in something from home and very often the smells of various enticing food wafts through the offices. One of the fastest growing populations in Central Florida is Venezuelan. If you have never have experienced Venezuelan food, you are missing out. Here are five foods and the recipes for them you should try to make or find at some local restaurant that specializes in that cuisine.

5 Venezuelan Recipes You Should Try

Venezuelan cuisine is diverse and flavorful, influenced by a mix of indigenous, European, and African culinary traditions. Here are five popular Venezuelan dishes loved by many, along with their recipes:

  1. Arepa Arepas are a staple food in Venezuela, made from cornmeal and cooked on a griddle. They can be filled with various ingredients such as cheese, ham, avocado, chicken, or beans.Recipe:
    • Ingredients:
      • 2 cups pre-cooked white or yellow cornmeal (masarepa)
      • 2 1/2 cups warm water
      • 1 teaspoon salt
    • Instructions:
      1. In a bowl, mix the cornmeal, salt, and warm water until a soft dough forms.
      2. Knead the dough for a few minutes until it’s smooth.
      3. Divide the dough into equal-sized balls and flatten them to form discs.
      4. Cook the arepas on a hot griddle or skillet for about 5 minutes on each side, until golden brown.
      5. Slice open the cooked arepas and fill them with your desired ingredients.
  2. Pabellón Criollo Pabellón Criollo is Venezuela’s national dish, consisting of shredded beef, black beans, rice, and fried plantains.Recipe:
    • Ingredients:
      • Shredded beef (you can use flank steak or skirt steak)
      • Cooked black beans
      • White rice
      • Ripe plantains
    • Instructions:
      1. Cook the shredded beef until tender, seasoned with onions, garlic, and spices.
      2. Cook the black beans separately with onions, peppers, and cumin until thickened.
      3. Cook the rice according to package instructions.
      4. Peel and slice the plantains, then fry until golden brown.
      5. Serve the shredded beef, black beans, rice, and fried plantains together on a plate.
  3. Cachapa Cachapas are sweet corn pancakes, usually served with cheese or as a side dish with butter.Recipe:
    • Ingredients:
      • 4 cups fresh corn kernels (or canned corn)
      • 1 cup cornmeal
      • 1/4 cup milk
      • Salt to taste
      • Butter for cooking
    • Instructions:
      1. Blend the fresh corn kernels until smooth.
      2. In a bowl, mix the blended corn, cornmeal, milk, and salt until well combined.
      3. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add butter.
      4. Pour a ladleful of the batter onto the skillet to form a pancake.
      5. Cook for a few minutes on each side until golden brown.
      6. Serve hot with cheese or butter.
  4. Hallaca Hallaca is a traditional Venezuelan dish often eaten during the Christmas season. It consists of a maize dough filled with a stew of beef, pork, chicken, capers, raisins, and olives, wrapped in plantain leaves and steamed.Recipe:
    • Ingredients:
      • Maize dough (masa)
      • Stew filling (beef, pork, chicken, capers, raisins, olives, onions, garlic, peppers)
      • Plantain leaves
    • Instructions:
      1. Prepare the stew filling by cooking the meats with onions, garlic, peppers, and spices until tender.
      2. Soak the plantain leaves in warm water to soften them.
      3. Spread a layer of maize dough on each plantain leaf.
      4. Add a spoonful of the stew filling onto the dough.
      5. Fold the plantain leaf to enclose the filling securely.
      6. Steam the hallacas for about 1 hour until cooked through.
      7. Serve hot.
  5. Tequeños Tequeños are cheese-filled breadsticks, often served as appetizers or snacks.Recipe:
    • Ingredients:
      • 1 cup all-purpose flour
      • 1 tablespoon butter, softened
      • 1/4 teaspoon salt
      • 1/4 cup water
      • Mozzarella cheese sticks
      • Oil for frying
    • Instructions:
      1. In a bowl, mix the flour, butter, salt, and water until a smooth dough forms.
      2. Roll out the dough into thin strips.
      3. Cut the mozzarella cheese sticks into smaller pieces.
      4. Place a piece of cheese at one end of each dough strip and roll it up to enclose the cheese.
      5. Heat oil in a deep fryer or skillet over medium heat.
      6. Fry the tequeños until golden brown and crispy.
      7. Serve hot with dipping sauce.
